Hi y’all, this is just a post to get things started here. One of my favorite hobbies recently has been crochet. I know I’m old enough to remember when crochet, especially afghans, was a thing; there was barely a house that didn’t have a striped afghan that a granny had made with love lying across the back of the sofa. Fast-forward to now, and just like that, everything that’s old is new again. I walked into Target, and all the flowy, ruffled dresses look like they came out of a 1980s Sears catalog.

So let’s go back to the future!
Anyways, my point is whether it’s an afghan, a dress, or a hobby. What’s old is new, so there’s no time like the present to get into crochet. It can be as cheap or as expensive as you’d like, so don’t let that be a stopping point for ya. It’s pretty easily portable and can be a great calming hobby to do if you are a fidgety person or just have to be doing something all the time.
So let’s start with the basics: Supplies
- Crochet hooks
- Yarn
- Pattern
- Embroidery Scissors
- Yarn needles (different from sewing needles)
- Youtube video instructions
Now What?
Okay, now that we have the basics out of the way, there is a need to decide which way you learn best. I say that because some people do best by watching a video and can see the technique well enough on those videos to get it down. However, if you are better with everything written out in front of you, a pattern might be your best bet. I will admit I’ve used both. Patterns are harder to read, as there are abbreviations and terms you kind of have to know the lingo before you can really use them, but if you are a quick learner, then it’s not too hard. There are also written patterns and drawn schematics that are done for more complicated patterns. Here is a great beginner-friendly design that gives you a taste of the terminology and gives you a video, a drawn pattern, and a written pattern. Please let me know what you think, and if you are currently working on any projects, tell me what you are working on.
